Fiona, a concert violinist, needed a refined home for her performances and media, and an easy way for venues to reach her.

Chapter I · Brief

What Fiona asked for

Fiona Qiu is a concert violinist in Sydney. A performer's site dates in small, constant ways: a concert passes, a photograph gets replaced. If every change has to come through me, it does not happen, and a portfolio nobody updates reads worse than none. So most of the build went into her not needing me.

Chapter II · Approach

Two things built so she never has to ask me

  1. Every word on the page is hers to change

The words live in the site, not in my code, so she edits them from her own login. Her biography is one text box that splits into paragraphs wherever she leaves a blank line, because that is how she writes.

  2. The performance list is ordered by dragging, and it feeds search directly

Performances and press are two lists, shown in the order she drags them into. Each concert also hands search engines its details, so it can appear in results on its own. Where a typed date is ambiguous I leave that concert out of the search data rather than guess, because one bad date makes search engines ignore the whole entry.

The performances page: concerts grouped by month, with past performances below
Ordered by dragging, not by date. Each concert also hands search engines its own details.
Chapter III · Inventory

What a visitor finds

  1. A hero that leads on the room rather than her face, on purpose.
  2. A privacy policy she rewrites in a single box, with sections that renumber themselves.
  3. An enquiry form that drops spam: a hidden field only a bot fills in, and anything sent within three seconds of the page loading.
A band of the gallery: performance photographs running in one continuous sequence
One ungrouped sequence, with no headings and no counts, so nothing tells you how much is left.
Chapter IV · Outcome

What this one started

Sleepless Violin came first, and Haven Designs was built around it. Two rules started here and stayed: the words belong to the owner, and what a site tells search engines comes from what a visitor can see. A privacy-page fix from this build went straight into a later client site.

In her words

I also have access to an easy editing page for the website, so I can easily update things like performance dates, photos, wording and other details whenever I need to.
